Reducing the size of Digital Photos

If you haven't already, download and install Irfanview  - http://www.irfanview.com  (Windows Only).

If Irfanview is already installed, follow these instructions to reduce the size of the image:

  • Open the Irfanview Application on your computer
  • On the File menu, select Open, then select the image you would like to reduce
  • You should now see the image on the screen
  • On the Image menu, select Resize/Resample (or use the shortcut Control - R)
  • Click on the option 640x480 Pixels, then on OK
  • On the File menu, select Save as
  • Change the Save as type to JPG - JPG/JPEG format
  • A dialog box will appear on the side of the Save picture as box
    Leave the quality as 80
Ensure that Save as progressive JPG and Save as greyscale JPG options are NOT clicked
  • Give the image a file name and then click Save
Recommendation - give the image a new name, and don't save it over the last file in case you want to use it for printing purpose at a later date.
I.E. if your file was called product1.jpg,  save the new file as product1_web.jpg
  • Congratulations, you've finished.
