Online Security Tips

Online attacks are becoming more common. It’s important to know what you can do to protect your information and business.  While there’s no bulletproof way to prevent an attack, here's some things you can do to help minimise the risk.

  • Keep your operating system up to date - Updates often fix vulnerabilities that attackers can find and use to access your system.
  • Install antivirus software - Use software from reputable companies, ensure it is kept up to date, and run scans regularly.
  • Back up your data - Options include using an external hard drive (maybe stored offsite) or a cloud-based service.
  • Create unique passwords - Choose different strong passwords for every account.
  • Use 2 Factor Authentication - When available, get codes sent to another device like your phone when logging in online.
  • Use free WiFi networks with caution - they could be untrusted networks and others could potentially see what you are doing.
  • Be smart with social media - Set your privacy so only friends and family can see your details, that way you limit what cyber criminals can learn about you.
  • Watch out for phishing emails - Legitimate looking emails can be very clever at tricking us to give out personal or financial information. Always verify the source of the emails before responding or clicking on any links.
  • Never email sensitive information - It's never a good idea to email information like login details and credit card details in case it is intercepted.
  • Check if a website is secure - Before entering in login credentials, credit card details, or personal information, ensure the website is secure.  Look for a paddlock stating the website is secure beside the website address.
